Anatomy of a Tupamaro

Childhood, pt. 2

I walked through the football field,
felt the grass on my cleated feet,
felt the rain on my growing hair.
I ran too fast through a dirt road,
landed on my ass and scarred it.

I fell off my bike,
and scraped my knee.
I ran from playground bullies,
and made orderly rows.

I walked to the airport
with tears in my eyes.
I walked to the stadium
to watch Peñarol.

I walked
on the soil,
on the footsteps,
on the voices
of the Tupamaros.
