Anatomy of a Tupamaro

Who Is Pepe Mujica?

1. A picture of José “Pepe” Mujica before his imprisonment.

2. An introduction he gives for an interview for a movie called “Human.”

“I am José Mujica. Farmer for a living for the first part of my life. Then, I dedicated myself to fighting for change and improvement in my society. And now, I am in a phase of being President. And tomorrow, like any son of a neighbor, I’ll be a pile of worms and disappear.”

3. Things said by his fellow Tupamaros.

“Man is himself and his circumstances. Here, there were circumstances.”

“I was very young, 30 years ago … we were just a few young guys.”

“Being a Tupamaro is more a feeling than a political decision.”

“A militant is himself, his soul, and his torturer.”

4. A perception.

Pepe Mujica is
the president of my country,
the Switzerland of Latin America,
nothing like Latin America,
everything but Latin America,
an upside-down map of Latin America:
our Punta Carretas Santa Claus.

Pepe Mujica is
a young revolutionary
who deals in killing and dying.

Pepe Mujica is
a newly elected legislator.
He looks like my mother’s ex,
like my sister’s father,
like he was a father to me.

5. An answer.

This is Pepe Mujica.
